For the first time I've seen, Waldo today branch-hopped across the nesting tree to check out the other side. There was some flapping involved, but not quite flight! This is the farthest apart I've seen these 2 nestlings since I've been "stalking" them. Waldon't remained close to the nest, but was quite curious about the goings-on.
Alas, Waldo never took the plunge, so to speak, and hopped back to the nest area the same way he had left. The 2 siblings had quite the reunion upon his return!
Today wasn't the day, but it's clearly getting close.
The Little Blue Heron's (LBH's) have just started hatching, and some fuzzy little white shapes can now be seen in 2 nests (so far). I counted 2 chicks in a nest this morning.
Many other nests now have between 2 and 4 eggs, and I expect to see many more chicks popping out soon. Between the 2 adjacent mangroves, I have now counted over 12 different nests.
And a surprise! One of the nests has a piebald (starting to turn blue) yearling sitting on it! I guess this one is promiscuous and a little more mature than I thought they were. There are 2 eggs in this nest, although this photo doesn't show them.
I'm curious if more of these yearlings will be nesting as well.
