This is the first blog post on my new page. The purpose of this site is to display and talk about some of the recent photos I've been shooting. Some of the photos will be shown here as thumbnails, and the above page will show larger representations. These are all photos shot with my 400mm lens. I've learned that using this lens is not nearly as easy as using the zoom that I have used for years. Steadiness is critical, and focus is very touchy. For example, the rule of thumb is to use a shutter speed that is the reciprocal of twice the focal length. In English, for example, this means that a handheld exposure for a 400mm lens should be no longer than 1/800 sec exposure. I believe it's much more critical than that, and even with a high f-stop, depth of field is very shallow, making focus paramount.
