As observed back in December, the Great Blue Herons (GBH) have again been building a nest, in the same approximate location as last year. The major difference is that it's lower in the mangrove tree, and seeing into the nest has been nearly impossible. The female has been sitting on the nest for some time, but I haven't been able to see any eggs or activity....until yesterday! The photo above shows a hint of a fuzzy creature by the female's feet; it disappeared from view, but I saw movement just prior to this photo. How many chicks? We shall see in the coming posts.
Last year's chick is now full-grown, and was hanging around in the reeds while the adult male brought back food to the nest.
He (she?) sometimes ventures near the new nest, but never too close and never interferes.
The alligators also seem to be doing well. Mama Gator has changed to a new location closer to the building for sunbathing. She seems to be a good 12 feet+ in length.
The babies are growing, but still small. Previously, they stayed quite close to the mother, but are now venturing out while Mom is sleeping. I counted 10 last time I got a good look, and here are some of them lounging and swimming around!
The future is promising a lot of activity over the next few months!
